Dream Diary #128: Final Destination

I arrived in a picturesque remote town in rural USA. I was trying to get to another state but my plane ticket had only managed to get me as far as this unnamed town. I knew I had to get to the airport and buy another ticket to get to my final destination but I didn't drive and didn't know anyone to give me a lift, so I decided I would have to hitchhike and started to ask strangers for directions.

The information I got was very confusing and contradictory with one person telling me to go this way and then another telling me to go in the opposite direction.

Exhausted and weary, I decided to take some time out from my travels and stay in the town I was in for a while, to rest and re-calibrate my plans.

Luckily, the town had a hotel in it so I asked for a room. The locals seemed intrigued by me and were a bit standoffish at first but soon warmed to me when they saw how in love with the town I was.

The town itself wasn't much to look at from the outside but I quickly fell for the remote location and the vast, wide open fields that sent my amateur photographer senses tingling.

The town also offered a very unique tourist attraction in the form of a partially free range petting zoo in the centre with all manner of animals - some not even native to the USA - on display.

Of course, I was dying to take pictures but every time I pointed my camera, someone would instantly stand in my way. They didn't do it deliberately, but there weren't that many people in the town so it was puzzling how someone always managed to get in the way of my shot.

I was having such an amazing time that I found myself running through all the scenarios in my head that would allow me stay there permanently.

Dream Diary #126: Muddy Waters

I was standing on the edge of a canal and there was barge in the water that I wanted to get to but the only way to get there was to walk across a very shaky, unstable wooden plank.

At first, it didn't look so bad; after all, if I fell I would just land in the water, right? However, a quick glance in the water showed that the canal was very muddy and oily looking and I didn't fancy falling in, so I ignored my initial desire to board the barge and decided against going on it at all.

I then made my way to the opposite side of the canal, where the water was much cleaner and resembled a typical public swimming pool setting, with dozens of people jumping in and splashing around. It looked like so much fun I decided to join in but before I could everyone decided to get out and go to the muddy side of the canal instead.

I couldn't understand their logic and tried to tell them about the state of the water over there, but no-one would listen.

So I watched as they each made their way over and crossed over the plank to the barge with ease and suddenly I was angry with myself for doubting that I would ever make it across and wished I'd trusted myself to be the trailblazer that I am on the inside, rather than the follower I appeared to be on the outside.

Dream Diary #115: Critical Thinking

I was in an art class, but not a class that a person would take in adulthood; it was like being in a school classroom, or more specifically, like being at primary or nursery school but I still had the mind of an adult.

I didn't enjoy school whilst I was there, but I was happy that I was in an art class because it was a subject I always tended to be good at and because I still had my adult mind, I knew that I could draw like my adult self, too.

My drawings aren't amazing on a technical level by any means, but I knew that my style would look impressive coming from a child of primary/nursery school age.

The exercise we were given was a test but I didn't feel the usual test anxiety I normally get when I know I'm being judged and assessed, because it was a subject I was passionate about.

I drew a black unicorn with wings flying through space with a neon rainbow in the background. Within the dream, I got so far and sensed I should stop while the drawing still looked good (something I do in real-life as well), but I got carried away and coloured the background in black too, which had the effect of lessening the impact of the unicorn in the foreground.

The end result wasn't terrible but I couldn't help but wish I'd coloured the background in a different colour.

However, when it came to showing our work, the teachers and other classmates were really impressed and crowded round my drawing, praising it.

Meanwhile, while I didn't think my drawing was awful, I was all too aware of my work's imperfections and couldn't stop myself from picking it apart.

Dream Diary #113: Game of Homes

For some reason, my mother, my sister and I had moved into a new house together, along with my sister's kids without my father and sister's husband.

Even though the house was located in a fairly urban setting, it seemed really isolated and cut off from the rest of the world. This feeling was exacerbated by the fact that the town seemed to be in a perpetual state of twilight and the house was in disrepair, almost derelict even.

However, one of the amazing things about the house was the garden which had an enormous pond-like swimming pool.

The pool, like the house, was shabby and overgrown with plant life. The water was crystal clear and you could see an overabundance of pond scum and algae clinging to the bottom. In spite of this, I was very excited at the prospect of having our very own pool in our backyard and wanted to jump right in, even though it hadn't been cleaned yet.

As it turned out, I didn't even need to go directly into the water to enjoy it as the various plants and flowers were sentient, interactive beings! I had so much fun sitting on the lily pads and letting them float me around the water. The plants even started to play games with me, creating little assault courses on top of the water.

It was like seeing the world through the eyes of a child again, where everything was a potential game or adventure.

Eventually, I was called to go inside, and just as my sister and I were about to enter the doorway to the house, my sister slipped and fell. At first, I thought she'd slipped on water but she said that it was amniotic fluid and that 'the doctor had warned her this might happen'. I was very puzzled because although my sister has had three children in real-life, they were all born via c-section and she has not given birth that recently, nor was there any indication that she had done so recently in the dream either.

Nevertheless, an ambulance was called, and for some reason the presence of the emergency services brought everyone in the neighbourhood out of their hiding places as dozens of people crowded round to see what was going on.

I, too, was concerned about my sister but I was also conscious about getting in the way of the paramedics doing their job so I hung back and observed from afar.

Dream Diary #107: Point of No Return

Myself and a friend were taking a walk through the woods together. She lived on one side of the woods, and I lived on the other. We hadn't seen each other for a while so we had a lot to talk about.

At first, everything was fine but things took a creepy turn when we started to suspect that we were being followed. Just to be sure, we meandered through the trees, to try and trick our pursuers - and sure enough they followed.

It turns out they were hunters, but to them, my friend and I looked like mythical creatures that they had come into the woods to hunt down.

Once again, my friend and I ran through the woods in an attempt to lose them, but no matter where we went, the hunter's followed close behind.

My friend confessed there was a way out of the situation, but she didn't mention it earlier because if we go through with it, there was no going back - if we followed the path right to the other side of the woods, where she lived, the hunters would not be able to find us, but we also wouldn't be able to go back. I wouldn't be able to go back to my old life.

At first I was scared but we held one another's hand as we ran full-force down the path and through to the other side of the woods.

We emerged in a sleepy little town and my fear quickly turned into excitement. My friend took me to her home that she told me was a 'homeless shelter' but looked more like a luxury hotel. The shelter was populated, not with people who were 'homeless' per se, but by those who were no longer suited to their old life, but had not yet grown into their future life and needed a place to crash while they worked out the finer details.

Dream Diary #106: I Predict A Riot

I was running late for my bus and could see it approaching from further down the road as I dashed into a local shop to get change for my bus fare.

The cashier behind the counter was an old acquaintance to me within the dream, and sort of resembled an old work colleague of mine. She engaged me in conversation, making me temporarily forget that I was running behind.

When I finished my purchase and was about to leave the shop, I couldn't believe my eyes; the entire street outside had just descended into chaos and mayhem!

There were people starting fires and destroying property everywhere. I'd never seen anything like it before in my life.

My bus pulled up and quickly sped off before any rioters could get on, but I didn't care as I knew it was too risky to go outside.

Luckily, the cashier and the rest of the staff let me take temporary refuge in the shop while we waited for the trouble to die down. We stood observing through the window.

The entire front of the shop was one big glass window pane that could easily have been broken but nobody seemed concerned or worried. Strangely, no-one attempted to come inside the shop either.

Eventually the trouble did start to ease off and so when I saw another bus pull up outside I decided to take it, even though it was far too late to go to my original destination.

Instead, I just took a leisurely trip into the countryside to enjoy nature and the rural surroundings. I began to notice that other's seemed to have followed my example and were taking the same path that I had created. It felt a bit creepy and weird at first but then it made me so happy that I could feel myself getting lighter and lighter until I felt as though I could fly.

Dream Diary #100: Holding Out for a Hero

I was staying in a hotel with my family and we were hanging out in the dining area, which instead of a traditional restaurant, was more like a food court.

The hotel grounds were being used as a film set for an action movie featuring superheroes (I think the recent influx of superhero crossover movies that are out or coming out have subconsciously affected me for some reason!) and much to my surprise and delight, myself and a few others were given roles as supporting superheroes!

They weren't lead roles or anything but they we would have actual screen time with a real character to play.

For a short time, we just filmed back-to-back action scenes and after a while, it didn't feel like a movie any more; it started to feel real. I even surprised myself with just how much ass I could kick, and how much I enjoyed it.

Then, it was time for the lead actor to film his scenes and myself and my fellow amateur actors gathered round to watch. Once again, the lines between reality and fantasy blurred and it was like watching an actual real-life superhero perform heroic stunts and save the day.

After the actor finished his scene, the director called a time-out and gathered all of the actors together; the heroes on one side, the villains on the other.

Apparently there had been some friction between some of the lead actors and it had affected the filming of the movie.

As an amateur and a background character it didn't really concern me and instead found myself unable to concentrate on anything except the fact that I was sitting next to the lead. I watched as he took two pieces of gum out of his pocket and put them down between us.

I don't why but I assumed that one piece was for me and put it in my mouth, without thinking.

When I saw that he was sitting next to his brother (also an actor) and watched him lean towards him to ask him if he wanted a piece of gum, I tapped him on the hand and said, "Excuse me, but I accidentally ate a piece of your gum," expecting him to be mad.

Instead he gave me a warm smile, said "that's okay" and got another piece of gum out of his pocket.

It was brief non-interaction, but it made me feel so happy just to be acknowledged by him.

We wrapped up the day and I went back to my family, who were still in the food court for some reason.

The following day I couldn't wait to put on my costume and become a superhero once again, but instead of a film set there was a wedding taking place. I looked around and all of the people who were my superhero team mates were now dressed as wedding guests.

I asked what was going on and was told "We're playing wedding guests today."

Dream Diary #97: Ethereal Guy

I was half-observing, half-participating.

A girl was jogging along a secluded beach when she discovered a mysterious man washed up on the shore.

He wasn't physically hurt, but seemed confused and excitable. He wasn't a local but was unable to tell the girl where he came from.

They ended up walking along the beach and then the town together, just talking and having fun, until they had spent the best part of the day with each other. It seemed as though he was seeing and experiencing some of the things they were doing for the very first time and the girl was enjoying showing them to him.

It was becoming very clear that she was falling very much in love with him.

At first she assumed that he was an angel that had fallen to earth because of his mysterious origins and innocent personality.

It turned out she was very close, as he was actually a mer-man from the ocean!

After spending the day together on land, he took her on a tour of his world under the sea. They interacted with the other marine creatures that they met along the way, and he took great delight in showing off his prowess by demonstrating how high he could breach the surface of the water, like a killer whale.

This is where I stopped observing and became a participant in the dream because he then grabbed my hand and took me up with him. The entire experience was breathtaking and otherworldly.

The girl reluctantly returned to her life on land, with only a vague promise that they would meet again, but it quickly became apparent her encounter with him had changed her life forever. She no longer fit in with her family or peers and life now just seemed all the more mundane and dull in comparison.

The Ghost of Green Lane

Green Lane

I was heading towards the shops one evening, in December. It was only about 5 PM, but because of the time of year, it was already quite dark. Nevertheless, I decided to walk through the lane, which is quite creepy and enclosed by trees and shrubbery. I usually avoid this route at all costs when I have to walk home at night, but it was only early evening so I wasn't put off.

I quickly changed my mind though, when I approached the lane, I saw a shadowy figure standing in the path under the street lamp. I didn't get a good look at them but it looked like they were waiting for someone. Feeling uneasy, I chose to go in the opposite direction of the one I was intending, and decided to head towards the main road.

After briskly walking several paces, I glanced over my shoulder. To my horror, the figure was only standing a few feet away! It looked like they had followed me, then stopped.

Of course after that, I started running. Eventually I made it to the main road and continued on my way, putting the panic I felt to to the back of my mind.

Then, just the other night, after having a meal with some friends, I found out about an urban legend of a ghost that haunts the lane and how it had warded her friends away from danger once. This triggered my memory of that evening and how upon seeing the figure in the lane, my first instinct was to change the route I was intending on travelling in...

Dream Diary #85: Ride Or Die

I was on a fairground ride that simulated the deaths of characters from movies while the ride shook and rocked back and forth, so you not only had to virtually experience how they died, you had to stay on your feet as well.

Most of the deaths were fairly innocuous until they revealed that the next simulated death would be from a science fiction movie featuring an alien. I don't remember the exact movie but I do remember that the deaths in it were very violent and very painful.

I started to panic. How could they simulate this?

I tried to get off but it was too late. The animatronic alien was revealed so I closed my eyes tight and hoped for the best.

I remember being poked and prodded a little, but overall it wasn't so bad. I had survived!

As I got off, the ride monitor told me that because I survived until the end, I could pick anything I wanted from the gift shop and keep it for free. The shop was laid out like a market stall and was very jumbled, however I could see that the vast majority of the items were toys and many of them were Disney merchandise. I didn't want anything for myself, so I decided to pick something for my niece.

As I was getting it for free I wanted to be thorough as possible; I wanted something that was fairly good quality. I had it in my head that I wanted a Little Mermaid item and even came across the DVD, but the box was empty and squashed.

Before I began my search it seemed that there was an abundance of Little Mermaid items, but as soon as I began searching, they were no longer there. Instead, the items that started to stand out to me were Snow White ones, so that's what I ended up choosing.

Dream Diary #5: Water World

From a visual and sensual perspective, this dream was absolutely stunning.

The dream began mundane enough - I was sitting outside a cafe with my mother and sister, enjoying a drink. Then, the dream somehow switched and instead of sitting outside a run-of-the-mill cafe, we were in a holiday resort.

The resort - fantastical, luxurious and somewhat futuristic - was an enormous tree (think: Avatar) that resided and thrived in salt water, overlooking a beautiful, clear, deep, turquoise ocean that stretched for miles, so that no land was visible, even from the highest peak.

After my mother, sister and I had finished our drinks we walked back to our room. The tree had a transparent glass staircase/path that wound all the way around the trunk of the tree and even as my sister and mother walked along the path I knew the glass would break as soon as I walked across - which it did!

I watched the glass crack beneath my feet - and observed just how many hundreds of feet I had to fall in the water - I was afraid, but as I began to fall I made a choice to just relax and 'go with the flow', as it were.

As I hit the water, it was a truly soothing and peaceful experience.

For a few moments, I simply lay back and let the water envelop me.

The water was absolutely beautiful; crystal clear and every bit of oceanic flora and fauna was visible as I made a conscious decision to swim amongst and interact with them.

I rose to the surface and saw many work men, tending to the roots of the tree.
